Vanity Reid Deterville (she/her)
I am a Black woman of trans experience and a Charleston native. I earned my B.A. in Political Science with a Concentration in Public Policy from the College of Charleston. My advocacy work for the liberation of BIPOC, specifically those Black, queer and trans, was galvanized during my service on the Board of Directors for Charleston Pride for two terms, and as an undergraduate assistant at the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture. I walk as a pioneer for Queer and Trans People of color through my activism and leadership with my Ballroom community and The Iconic House of Escada. I now call the Bull City home where I serve as the Director of the Gender Resources Advocacy and Support Program (GRASP) of the LGBTQ Center of Durham in Durham, NC. I am grateful to be a member-facilitator of the Transformative Teaching Collective, where we build and share practices for connection and healing justice to foster collective liberation.
